UC 72 Asparagus Seeds — Plant Once, Harvest for 15+ Years | Drought-Tolerant, Fusarium Wilt Resistant, Large Dark-Green Spears

UC 72 Asparagus is one of the most rewarding long-term investments you can make in your garden. Developed specifically for drought tolerance and resistance to Fusarium Wilt — the most common asparagus disease — UC 72 produces large, dark-green spears with compact heads that tend to run larger than the classic Mary Washington variety. Once established after 2–3 years, plants deliver heavy yields season after season for up to 15 more years with minimal effort.

An excellent choice for both home gardeners and market growers who want a productive, low-maintenance perennial that keeps giving back year after year.

Why Grow UC 72 Asparagus?

  • Plant once, harvest for 15+ years — one of the most productive long-term garden investments
  • Drought tolerant — more heat and drought resistant than most asparagus varieties
  • Fusarium Wilt resistant — bred specifically to resist the most common asparagus disease
  • Large dark-green spears — compact heads; tends to run larger than Mary Washington
  • Excellent for market & home gardens — reliable, high-yield perennial
  • Open-pollinated — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow 1 inch deep in well-drained soil amended with organic matter. Full sun required. Keep weeds out — asparagus does not compete well with weeds in early years. First harvest is 2–3 years after planting and will be lighter than subsequent years. After harvest each season, cut plants down to 1 inch above soil and mulch for winter protection. To harvest, cut each spear just below the soil when 8–11 inches long. Tip: put harvested spears into water immediately to retain moisture.
