Cucamelon (Mexican Sour Gherkin), Heirloom Seeds β€” The Inca Heirloom That Looks Like a Tiny Watermelon

Also known as Mouse Melon, Cucamelon is the newly rediscovered heirloom that was grown by the Incas β€” and once you grow it, you’ll understand why it survived for centuries. These 1–2 inch teeny, crunchy fruits look exactly like tiny doll-sized rattlesnake watermelons, with a distinctive tangy, citrus crunch followed by a lingering sweet cucumber flavor β€” like they’re already pickled. Delicious eaten raw, added to salsas and salads, pickled, or simply eaten as a juicy snack straight from the vine. Kids love them.

Beautiful lacey vines reach 6–8 feet and are highly productive until frost. Slow to start, but once they get going, the harvest is extraordinary. In warmer climates or greenhouse settings, plants also produce edible tubers similar to crosnes. Great for trellises and hanging baskets. 60–70 days.

Why Grow Cucamelon?

  • Ancient Inca heirloom β€” a newly rediscovered variety with genuine heritage
  • Tiny watermelon appearance β€” 1–2 inch fruits that delight children and adults alike
  • Tangy citrus crunch β€” followed by sweet cucumber flavor, like naturally pickled
  • Highly productive β€” beautiful lacey vines produce abundantly until frost
  • Versatile kitchen ingredient β€” raw, pickled, in salsas, salads, and as snacks
  • Open-pollinated β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors in a warm location (70–80Β°F) 4–6 weeks before last frost β€” seeds will not germinate in cold or damp conditions; use a heat mat. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed. Space plants 12–18 inches apart in full sun. Trellis or grow in hanging baskets. Water consistently. Slow to establish but highly productive once growing. Harvest at 1–2 inches.
