Sugar Baby Watermelon — The Classic Icebox Melon, A Picnic Staple for Generations

Sugar Baby has been a staple at summer picnics for decades — and for good reason. This compact, space-saving heirloom produces 6–10 pound “icebox” melons on vines just 3½ feet long, making it the perfect watermelon for smaller gardens, raised beds, and gardeners who want big flavor without sprawling vines. The dark green exterior gives way to bright red, firm, fine-grained flesh that is super sweet and deeply satisfying. Widely adapted and reliable across most U.S. regions. 70–80 days.

Fits in the refrigerator as easily as it fits in the garden — the original personal-sized watermelon.

Why Grow Sugar Baby?

  • Classic icebox melon — 6–10 lb fruits sized perfectly for the fridge
  • Super sweet scarlet flesh — firm, fine-grained, and deeply flavorful
  • Compact 3½ ft vines — space-saving, excellent for raised beds and smaller gardens
  • Widely adapted heirloom — reliable performance across most U.S. regions
  • High antioxidant content — lycopene-rich red flesh
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost — watermelons resent root disturbance, so use biodegradable pots. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed when soil has warmed to at least 65°F. Space plants 36 inches apart in full sun. Use black plastic mulch to warm soil and speed maturity. Water consistently but reduce as fruits approach maturity. Harvest when the tendril nearest the fruit dries and the underside turns yellow.
