Southport White Globe (Allium cepa) is a classic staple onion dating back to 1906 — a globe-shaped variety that produces mild, delicious white onions suitable for cooking, salads, and more. Noted for its versatility in all types of cuisine and its ability to thrive in cooler weather, Southport White Globe is a long-day onion for northern states that can also be grown as a fall or winter crop in warmer climates. A reliable, time-tested heirloom for any kitchen garden.
Start indoors 2–3 months before last frost. Sow seeds ½ inch deep in a flat, keep at room temperature and consistently moist. When tops fall over, trim to 3–4 inches. Transplant outdoors 4 weeks before last frost (or when soil reaches 55°F), spacing 4–6 inches apart in full sun with light, rich soil. To direct sow, sow 3 seeds per inch ½ inch deep; thin to 2–6 inches.
