Lakota squash was grown by the Lakota Sioux people as a staple food source β a rare Native American winter squash that was only widely available recently, and one that rewards the gardener with both beauty and exceptional flavor. Distinct pear-shaped fruits in striking red, orange, and green make it a stunning fall decoration, while the fine-grained orange flesh is sweet, nutty, and excellent for baking. Average weight is 5β7 pounds, with excellent storage that makes it a practical winter keeper as well as a beautiful one. 85β105 days.
Direct sow outdoors after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 65Β°F, or start indoors 3β4 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Space plants 36β48 inches apart in full sun. Water consistently. Harvest at 85β105 days when rind is hard. Cure at room temperature for 10β14 days before storage.
