Borage (Borago officinalis) — also known as Starflower or Bee Bread — is a self-seeding annual with hollow, bristly, branching stems up to 2 feet tall. Striking blue or purplish star-shaped flowers bloom from June to August, attracting bees all summer and increasing pollination of nearby plants. Rich in calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, B and C vitamins, and beta-carotene. Dried leaves brew into a refreshing cucumber-flavored tea. Young leaves used in salads; older leaves cooked as greens. Excellent companion plant for tomatoes, brassicas, and strawberries. 30+ seeds per packet.
Direct sow outdoors after last frost in full sun. Sow seeds ½ inch deep, 12 inches apart. Water consistently until established. Self-seeds freely — allow some plants to go to seed for next year’s crop. Note: borage has notoriously low germination — extra seeds included. Plant generously for best results.
