Charentais (Cucumis melo) originated in the Poitou-Charentes region of western France circa 1920 and is widely considered the finest melon ever developed β prized for its extraordinary high sugar content, smooth texture, and ambrosial fragrance. Thick, firm orange flesh with a small seed cavity. Smooth blue-green skin turns yellow when ripe and the melon slips easily from its stem. The Randon family brought Charentais to fruition nearly a century ago, and it remains the benchmark for melon excellence. 90 days.
Start indoors 3β4 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed into warm soil in full sun. Space plants 3β4 feet apart. Water consistently. Harvest when skin turns yellow and melon slips from vine.
