Mizuna (Brassica rapa var. japonica) is the Japanese mustard green that belongs in every salad garden. Dandelion-like jagged-edged leaves with a mild, sweet, earthy flavor β noticeably milder than other mustard greens β make Mizuna the perfect gateway into Asian greens. It grows faster than almost anything else in the cool-season garden, withstands heat longer than lettuce, and is slow to bolt. A true cut-and-come-again plant that keeps producing all season. Harvest baby greens in just 10 days, tender full leaves at 30 days, or use as a microgreen for a harvest in under a week. Excellent raw in salads, wilted in stir-fries, or added to soups. Seeds germinate readily even in cold, wet spring conditions.
Direct sow outdoors 4β6 weeks before last frost or in late summer for fall harvest. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep, 1β2 inches apart. Thin to 6 inches for full plants. Germinates readily in cold, wet conditions. Full sun to part shade β shade extends harvest in warm weather. Water consistently.
