Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a member of the mint family with a history stretching back to pre-Columbian Aztec civilization β a true ancient superfood that has earned its modern reputation. Purple or white flowers rise on tall spikes, producing clusters of tiny seeds that are among the most nutrient-dense foods you can grow. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, B vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc. Eat raw, soak in juice or water for Chia Fresca, grind into Pinole for porridge or baked goods, or add to any dish for a nutritional boost. Easy to grow in warm climates. 300+ seeds per packet.
Chia thrives in warm weather and is best suited for USDA Zones 8β11. Direct sow seeds over prepared soil and keep moist β seeds germinate quickly. Can also be started in pots and transplanted. Space plants 12β18 inches apart. Plants produce tall spikes of purple or white flowers. Harvest when flowers begin to yellow and dry β cut stalks and dry thoroughly, then thresh to release seeds. Store in an airtight container.
