Chia, Heirloom Herb Seeds β€” The Ancient Aztec Superfood Rich in Omega-3s, Fiber, and Minerals

Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a member of the mint family with a history stretching back to pre-Columbian Aztec civilization β€” a true ancient superfood that has earned its modern reputation. Purple or white flowers rise on tall spikes, producing clusters of tiny seeds that are among the most nutrient-dense foods you can grow. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, B vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc. Eat raw, soak in juice or water for Chia Fresca, grind into Pinole for porridge or baked goods, or add to any dish for a nutritional boost. Easy to grow in warm climates. 300+ seeds per packet.

Why Grow Chia?

  • Exceptional nutritional profile β€” rich in omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, B vitamins, and minerals
  • Versatile in the kitchen β€” raw, soaked, ground into Pinole, or added to any dish
  • Beautiful ornamental plant β€” tall spikes of purple or white flowers
  • Easy to grow in warm climates β€” germinates quickly, low maintenance
  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Chia thrives in warm weather and is best suited for USDA Zones 8–11. Direct sow seeds over prepared soil and keep moist β€” seeds germinate quickly. Can also be started in pots and transplanted. Space plants 12–18 inches apart. Plants produce tall spikes of purple or white flowers. Harvest when flowers begin to yellow and dry β€” cut stalks and dry thoroughly, then thresh to release seeds. Store in an airtight container.
