Golden Detroit (Beta vulgaris) is the beet that delivers all the flavor of red beets without any of the mess. Round, orange-gold roots stay gold-yellow when cooked — no bleeding, no staining, no pink everything. The same sweet texture and flavor as red beets, but with a beautiful golden color that makes it as stunning on the plate as it is in the garden. The deep green tops are delicious too — cook them like Swiss chard for a genuine dual-purpose vegetable. Good bolt resistance and stores well. 55 days.
Direct sow outdoors 4–6 weeks before last frost or in late summer for fall harvest. Sow seeds ½ inch deep, 2–3 inches apart, in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin to 3–4 inches. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest at 55 days when roots reach 2–3 inches in diameter.
