Great Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) β also known as Aaronβs Rod, Common Mullein, and Velvet Plant β is a striking wild biennial with soft, fuzzy pale leaves and tall yellow flower spikes that command attention in any garden. A two-phase plant: in year one it forms a large, beautiful downy rosette; in the spring to summer of year two it sends up an impressive flowering wand that can reach 6 feet or more. The most productive and best-respected species for leaf production, traditionally used topically as an emollient to smooth skin and as an astringent. Seeds are remarkably long-lived β documented to remain viable in soil for decades to centuries.
Important: Mullein seeds are light-dependent germinators β do NOT bury them. Sow in spring by sprinkling seeds on the soil surface and tamp securely. Keep warm, evenly moist, and in light until germination, which is rapid. The plant prefers disturbed soil and grows well in clay, gravel, or loam in full sun with only moderate water. Thin or transplant to 2 feet apart. Biennial β rosette forms in year 1, flowers in year 2.
