Matsushima, Heirloom Napa Cabbage Seeds — The Japanese Barrel-Shaped Heading Cabbage for Pickling, Soups, and Microgreens

Matsushima (Brassica rapa Pekinensis group) is a classic Japanese heirloom heading cabbage — popular for its barrel-shaped head, easy growth, and hardiness against cold temperatures. Well suited for close planting and produces high-quality heads. Traditionally pickled in Japan and Korea, and dried in China for soups during the cold season. Rich in dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K. Also excellent for microgreens. Grows best at 60–65°F. 70–80 days. 200+ seeds per packet.

Why Grow Matsushima?

  • Classic Japanese heirloom — barrel-shaped heads, easy to grow
  • Cold hardy — performs well in cool and cold conditions
  • Traditional pickling cabbage — used in Japan, Korea, and China for centuries
  • Rich in vitamins A, C, and K — nutritious and delicious
  • Excellent for microgreens — fast and productive
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Sow in early July for fall harvest, or in early spring for summer harvest. Direct sow or start indoors 4–6 weeks before transplanting. Grows best at 60–65°F. Space plants 12–18 inches apart in full sun. Keep soil consistently moist. Warmer areas may experience earlier harvest and looser leaf formation. Harvest at 70–80 days when heads are firm.
