Iceberg Crisphead Lettuce β€” The Great American Lettuce, Unrivaled in Crispiness Since 1894

Introduced in 1894, Iceberg quickly became the great American lettuce β€” and it’s easy to see why. Curved, overlapping leaves form firm, tightly packed round heads with fringed, ruffled deep-green outer leaves and pale, silvery-white hearts that are unrivaled in crispiness. The creamy white inner leaves are tightly packed and exceptionally fresh-tasting, while the deep green outer leaves are delicious in their own right. Prized by home gardeners and farmers alike for its firm heads, outstanding freshness retention, and satisfying crunch, Iceberg thrives in cooler weather and delivers consistent, reliable heads season after season.

500+ seeds per packet β€” excellent value for succession planting.

  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost, or direct sow outdoors in early spring or late summer for a fall crop. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Thin to 12–18 inches apart for full heads. Water consistently β€” irregular watering causes tip burn and bolting. Harvest when heads are firm and solid. Provide afternoon shade in warm weather to extend the season.
