Danish Ballhead (Brassica oleracea) is the premier late-season storage cabbage — big 7–10-inch, light-green, well-protected heads averaging 5–7 lbs with mild, tender flavor. Excellent yields, very dependable, and well-adapted to mountain areas and the Northwest. A standard storage type that keeps exceptionally well — pull whole plants in fall and hang upside-down, root intact, in a cool basement. Keeps at least one month, and up to three or four months under suitable conditions. Great for sauerkraut, coleslaw, and general cooking. 200+ seeds per packet.
A late-season type — best with early-summer sowings. Start indoors 6–8 weeks before transplanting. Space plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun. Water consistently. Harvest in fall when heads are firm and solid. For storage, pull whole plants and hang upside-down, root intact, in a cool basement — keeps 1–4 months.
