Bloody Dock, Heirloom Herb Seeds — The Stunning Deer-Resistant Perennial With Burgundy-Veined Leaves and Lemony Spinach Flavor

Bloody Dock (Rumex sanguineus) — also known as Red Sorrel — is a stunning hardy perennial with elongated, medium-green leaves exquisitely veined in brilliant burgundy-purple. Quickly forms an attractive clump, sending up red flower clusters in early summer followed by brown seed heads. An excellent, deer-resistant accent plant. Beautiful to look at and easy to grow — takes shade but does even better in full sun. Young leaves are edible raw with a flavor like spinach or chard with a hint of lemony tartness. Young leaves can also be cooked as for spinach or chard. 200+ seeds per packet.

Why Grow Bloody Dock?

  • Stunning burgundy-veined leaves — a dramatic ornamental accent in any garden
  • Deer resistant — reliable in deer-prone areas
  • Edible young leaves — spinach-chard flavor with lemony tartness
  • Hardy perennial — returns year after year with minimal care
  • Tolerates shade — versatile placement in the garden
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors in early spring or fall. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in full sun to part shade. Space plants 12 inches apart. Water consistently until established. Harvest only tender young leaves for eating — older leaves become tougher. Divide clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigor.
