Amish Snap Pea was being grown in Amish communities long before present-day snap pea types were ever developed — a testament to just how good this variety really is. Vigorous 5–6 foot vines are covered in medium-sized, 2–3 inch translucent green pods with a sweet, crisp flavor that is delicate and delicious even as the seeds develop inside. Yields abundantly over six or more weeks when kept picked regularly, making it one of the most productive snap peas for the home garden.
Pick them young for the sweetest snap, or let them fill out — either way, Amish Snap Peas deliver a harvest that keeps coming.
Direct sow outdoors 4–6 weeks before last frost — peas prefer cool soil and will germinate in temperatures as low as 40°F. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, 2–3 inches apart, in rows 18–24 inches apart. Provide a trellis or support for 5–6 foot vines. Water consistently. Pick pods regularly to encourage continuous production — leaving pods on the vine slows new production. Can also be sown in late summer for a fall harvest.
