Utah Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion — 1 lb+ Bulbs, Sweet & Mild, Recommended by Utah State University

Utah Yellow Sweet Spanish is the benchmark sweet onion for Western gardens. Large bulbs — sometimes weighing a pound or more — have a beautiful straw-colored skin and white, sweet, mild-flavored flesh that is exceptional for fresh eating, grilling, and cooking. Well adapted to the Western States, with moderate Pink Root tolerance and fair storage characteristics. Recommended by Utah State University for home garden performance.

Onions grown from seed are generally better quality than set-grown onions — and with 200+ seeds per packet, you’ll have plenty to work with.

Why Grow Utah Yellow Sweet Spanish?

  • Sweet & mild flavor — excellent for fresh eating, grilling, and cooking
  • Pink Root tolerant — moderate resistance to one of the most common onion diseases
  • Well adapted to Western States — proven performance in Western climates
  • Recommended by USU — Utah State University endorsed for home gardens
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 10–12 weeks before last frost for transplanting, or direct sow outdoors as soon as soil can be worked in spring. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, ½ inch apart. Thin to 4–6 inches for full-sized bulbs. Full sun and well-drained, fertile soil are essential. An intermediate-day onion — suited to latitudes between 32–42°N (roughly the Western U.S.). Harvest when tops fall over and begin to dry. Cure 2–3 weeks before storing.
