St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the most widely studied medicinal herbs in the world — a short, woody, drought-tolerant perennial shrub that has been esteemed since ancient times for its healing properties. Named after John the Baptist and traditionally harvested around the midsummer feast of St. John, this multifaceted herb produces fragrant golden-yellow flowers from mid to late summer that are irresistible to pollinators. The oil in the leaves has been used topically for centuries for wounds, sunburns, and general aches and pains. Compact and low-maintenance, it also makes an attractive ground cover along sidewalks and driveways.
A hardy perennial that naturalizes easily and returns reliably year after year.
Surface sow indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost — seeds need light to germinate. Keep soil moist at 65–70°F. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed in full sun with well-draining soil, spacing 12–16 inches apart. Drought-tolerant once established. Cut back in late fall or early spring to encourage fresh growth. Self-sows modestly once established.
