Most of the mints we use today, including spearmint, came to North America with the Colonists, and it has been a kitchen garden staple ever since. Bee and butterfly friendly, spearmint is also a valuable pollinator plant that attracts beneficial insects all season long.

Growing Notes

Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost. Surface sow — mint seeds need light to germinate. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun to part shade with moist, well-draining soil. Grow in containers to prevent spreading — mint spreads vigorously by underground runners and can become invasive in open beds. Harvest leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth. Perennial in zones 4–9; grow as annual in colder climates.
