Spearmint β€” The Classic Colonial Herb That Flavors Everything From Lamb to Lemonade

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is one of the most versatile and beloved herbs in the garden β€” and one of the oldest in American cultivation. Most of the mints we use today, including spearmint, came to North America with the Colonists, and it has been a kitchen garden staple ever since. The fresh, bright leaves are used to flavor iced drinks, teas, sauces, vegetables, and lamb, and make an exceptional herbal tea for the pure pleasure of it. Bee and butterfly friendly, spearmint is also a valuable pollinator plant that attracts beneficial insects all season long.

A vigorous perennial that returns year after year β€” grow in containers to keep it beautifully in check.

Why Grow Spearmint?

  • Classic Colonial heirloom β€” one of the oldest cultivated mints in North America
  • Incredibly versatile β€” teas, iced drinks, sauces, vegetables, lamb & desserts
  • Bee & butterfly friendly β€” attracts pollinators all season
  • Vigorous perennial β€” returns year after year in zones 4–9
  • Grow in containers β€” keeps the vigorous roots beautifully in check
  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost. Surface sow β€” mint seeds need light to germinate. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun to part shade with moist, well-draining soil. Grow in containers to prevent spreading β€” mint spreads vigorously by underground runners and can become invasive in open beds. Harvest leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth. Perennial in zones 4–9; grow as annual in colder climates.
