Ruby Red Onion — The Long-Storing Heirloom Red Onion That Lasts All Winter

Ruby Red earns its name from its beautiful red-burgundy skin — and earns its place in the garden from its exceptional storage life. A large, firm, medium-large globe onion, Ruby Red stores reliably for 5–6 months, making it one of the best heirloom red onions for putting up a winter supply. Crunchy, aromatic, and deeply flavorful, the plants are very reliable and heavily yielding — a popular variety with home gardeners and market growers alike.

A Long-Day onion suited to northern latitudes (above 36°N), where longer summer days trigger bulb formation.

Why Grow Ruby Red Onion?

  • 5–6 month storage life — one of the best heirloom red onions for winter keeping
  • Large, firm, medium-large globe — beautiful red-burgundy skin
  • Crunchy & aromatic — excellent flavor fresh, roasted, or pickled
  • Heavy yielding & reliable — consistent production season after season
  • Long-Day variety — ideal for northern gardens above 36°N latitude
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 10–12 weeks before last frost for transplanting, or direct sow outdoors as soon as soil can be worked in spring. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, ½ inch apart, in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 4–6 inches for full-sized bulbs. Full sun and well-drained, fertile soil are essential. Long-Day onions require 14–16 hours of daylight to form bulbs — best suited to latitudes above 36°N. Harvest when tops fall over and begin to dry. Cure in a warm, dry location for 2–3 weeks before storing.
