Poona Kheera, Heirloom Cucumber Seeds — The Ancient Indian Heirloom That Transforms From Creamy Yellow to Golden-Brown, With Exceptional Sweetness

Some cucumbers are grown for yield. Some for size. Poona Kheera (Cucumis sativus) is grown for pure, unapologetic sweetness — and it has been, in the gardens of Pune, India, for centuries. This extraordinary heirloom starts life as a pale, creamy yellow fruit. It slowly transforms into a golden-brown beauty with crackled, papery skin that looks unlike anything else in the garden. No bitterness. No tough skin. Just sweet, juicy, tender cucumber — straight from the vine.

Why Grow Poona Kheera?

  • Exceptional sweetness — consistently rated among the sweetest cucumbers, mild, juicy, and completely bitterness-free
  • Unique color transformation — starts creamy yellow-white and matures to stunning golden-russet with crackled skin.
  • Thin, tender skin — no peeling required at any stage
  • Heat-tolerant — thrives in hot summers, a reflection of its Indian heritage
  • Dual harvest window — harvest young (pale yellow) for fresh eating, or let mature (golden-brown) for seed saving
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow or start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost. Plant after the last frost when the soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Space 12–18 inches apart. Trellis is recommended for the best fruit shape and airflow. Water consistently — tolerates heat better than most cucumbers. Harvest at pale yellow stage (4–5 inches) for peak sweetness. Allow to mature to golden-brown for full seed saving.

In the Kitchen

Slice thin and eat fresh with a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lime — the classic Indian preparation. Add to raitas, salads, and chilled soups. Quick-pickle with cumin and mustard seed for an Indian-spiced refrigerator pickle. Or eat them whole, straight from the vine, the way they've been enjoyed in Pune for centuries.
