Moscow is the Russian heirloom beefsteak that was bred for exactly the kind of challenging conditions that defeat lesser tomatoes. Developed for the short, cool summers of the Moscow region, this variety produces large, meaty, deeply flavorful fruits on vigorous plants that ripen reliably even when the season is brief. The result is a tomato with genuine Old World character — rich, satisfying, and built to perform where other large heirlooms struggle.
An indeterminate, open-pollinated variety that is an excellent choice for northern gardens, high-altitude growing, and anywhere the growing season is shorter than you’d like.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage indeterminate vines. Water consistently. Harvest when fruits are fully colored and give slightly to gentle pressure.
