Lutz Long Season Beet β€” The Winter Keeper That Never Gets Tough or Woody

Lutz Long Season (also known as Winter Keeper or Lutz Green Leaf) is one of the most remarkable heirloom beets you can grow. Unlike most beets that turn tough and woody as they enlarge, Lutz stays sweet, tender, and deeply flavorful at any size β€” whether harvested young and small or left to grow to an enormous size late in the season. It’s the beet that rewards patient gardeners with unmatched old-time flavor and outstanding long-term storage through the winter months.

Beloved by Amish and Mennonite gardeners for generations, Lutz is a true dual-purpose crop β€” the huge, glossy green, pink-veined chard-like tops are just as delicious as the roots, braised or sautΓ©ed as a cooked green.

Why Grow Lutz Long Season?

  • Never tough or woody β€” stays sweet and tender at any size, young or enormous
  • Exceptional winter storage β€” one of the best heirloom beets for long-term keeping
  • Harvest at any stage β€” purple-red roots, round to elongated, flexible harvest window
  • Delicious dual-purpose tops β€” huge, glossy, pink-veined greens excellent as a cooked vegetable
  • Amish & Mennonite heirloom β€” generations of proven garden performance
  • Open-pollinated β€” save seed year after year from your best roots

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors 4–6 weeks before last frost or in late summer for a fall/winter harvest. Sow seeds Β½ inch deep, 2–3 inches apart, in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 4–6 inches for large root development. Water consistently. Harvest roots at any size β€” Lutz is best when allowed to size up through summer and fall for maximum sweetness and storage quality.
