Jeok Ssam Shiso (Perilla frutescens) is a warm-season annual originating from Vietnam β a common Asian herb with smaller leaves and a more robust, aromatic flavor than Japanese perilla. Deep green on top, deep red-purple on the underside. Often grown as an ornamental accent in the garden. Traditionally cooked with seafood. Used in Vietnamese shrimp and fish dishes, banh tom, thit heo nau ya ba ba, and pickling. 200+ seeds per packet.
Direct sow by broadcasting seeds in late spring or summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. Seeds need light to germinate β cover with only a thin layer of soil. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Heat tolerant, prefers full sun to light shade. Harvest leaves as needed throughout the season.
