Early Jersey Wakefield (Brassica oleracea) is one of the most storied cabbages in American garden history — first grown in America in 1840 and more widely grown than all other first early cabbages combined. Distinctive pointy, pyramidal 2–3 lb heads with sparse outside foliage that permits close spacing. Tender, flavorful, waxy-looking heads prized by home and market gardeners alike. An excellent fall cabbage as well as spring. Not suitable for long-term storage, but exceptional for fresh eating. 63 days. 200+ seeds per packet.
Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost, or direct sow in late summer for fall harvest. Transplant outdoors spacing plants 12–15 inches apart in full sun — compact pyramidal shape permits close spacing. Water consistently. Harvest at 63 days when heads are firm. Not suitable for long-term storage — best eaten fresh.
