Drumhead (Brassica oleracea) is a classic heirloom cabbage dating back to before 1885 — large, flattened drumhead-type heads in beautiful blue-green with good wrapper leaves. Heads average 10–12 inches in diameter and weigh 10–12 lbs. Superior quality: very firm, crisp, and tender. Very cold hardy and stores well. Perfect for making sauerkraut. An excellent choice for home gardens and market growers. 200+ seeds per packet.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow in late spring for a fall/winter crop. Transplant outdoors spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun. Water consistently and deeply. Fertilize with nitrogen-rich amendments. Harvest when heads are firm and solid. Stores well — excellent for long-term storage and sauerkraut.
