Detroit Dark Red (Beta vulgaris) is the standard by which all other beets are measured — a fine mid-season variety with a rich, dark-red interior and uniform 3-inch globe shape that has been the backbone of American beet gardens for generations. Early, reliable, and versatile, Detroit Dark Red stores well and is equally suited to canning, freezing, and fresh eating. The dark green leaves striped with red are wonderful braised or added to salads — a genuine dual-purpose vegetable. 59–70 days.
Direct sow outdoors 4–6 weeks before last frost or in late summer for fall harvest. Sow seeds ½ inch deep, 2–3 inches apart, in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin to 3–4 inches. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest at 59–70 days when roots reach 2–3 inches in diameter.
