Common Chives are one of the most rewarding and low-maintenance herbs you can grow. A small perennial herb that grows in clumps — likely originating from the Siberian highlands — chives reach 8–12 inches tall and come back year after year with minimal care. The slender leaves add a fresh, mild green onion flavor to salads, potatoes, eggs, soups, and countless other dishes, while the beautiful pink-purple flowers are fully edible and make a stunning garnish. Excellent for growing indoors, in containers, and in garden borders.
One of the easiest herbs to establish from seed, and one of the first to emerge in spring.
Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost, or direct sow outdoors in early spring. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Thin to 4–6 inches apart. Full sun preferred but tolerates part shade. Water consistently. Harvest leaves by snipping 2–3 inches above the soil — plants will regrow quickly. Divide clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigor. Deadhead flowers to prevent self-seeding if desired.
