Charleston Wakefield (Brassica oleracea) was introduced in 1892 as a descendant of Early Jersey Wakefield — larger than its ancestor but still conical in shape and just as tasty. Large, 6–8-inch elongated heads tip the scales at 4–6 lbs and store extremely well. Heat resistant, but tolerates cooler temperatures as well — an excellent choice for the garden at any time of year. A longtime heirloom favorite that has yet to lose its flavor. 70–85 days. 300+ seeds per packet.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost and transplant after last frost for summer harvest, or direct seed in mid to late summer for fall harvest. Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade in hot weather. Space plants 18 inches apart. Water consistently. Heads mature in 70–85 days.
