Bull Blood β€” The Heirloom Beet With Stunning Dark Red-Purple Tops and a Dual Harvest of Greens and Roots

Bull Blood is an older cultivar beloved for its stunningly beautiful dark red-purple tops and remarkable flavor β€” a true dual-purpose beet that delivers two harvests from one planting. The leaves are very hardy and exceptional in salad mix, with that deep jewel-toned color that makes any salad visually stunning. For salad mix, sow very thickly and cut in about 28 days β€” if kept moist and well-fertilized, the roots will regrow for another cutting. Grow on to full maturity and the dark red roots deliver good quality and sweetness. Tops ready in 35 days, roots in 55 days.

Why Grow Bull Blood?

  • Stunning dark red-purple tops β€” jewel-toned color that makes salads visually spectacular
  • Dual harvest β€” cut greens at 28–35 days, harvest roots at 55 days
  • Regrows after cutting β€” keep moist and fertilized for a second cutting
  • Sweet, dark red roots β€” good quality and flavor at maturity
  • Hardy leaves β€” excellent in salad mix and microgreens
  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors 4–6 weeks before last frost or in late summer for fall harvest β€” beets prefer cool weather. Sow seeds Β½ inch deep, 1 inch apart, in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 3–4 inches apart for root production. For salad mix, sow very thickly and do not thin β€” cut at 28 days and keep moist for regrowth. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest roots when 1–3 inches in diameter for best flavor.
