Why the Three Sisters Work

The Three Sisters — corn, beans, and squash — is one of the oldest and most successful companion planting systems in the world, developed by Native American peoples over thousands of years. Corn provides a trellis for the beans to climb; beans fix nitrogen in the soil to feed the corn and squash; squash spreads along the ground, shading out weeds and retaining moisture. Together they create a self-sustaining, highly productive garden ecosystem.

Growing Notes

Plant in a sunny location after the last frost. Sow corn first in a block (not a row) for good pollination. When corn is 4–6 inches tall, plant beans around the base. Plant squash seeds between the corn hills. Water consistently and harvest each crop at its appropriate stage.
