Tricolor Romaine Blend Heirloom Lettuce Seeds

Bring three kinds of romaine to your salad bowl with one sowing. Tricolor Romaine Blend combines green Vivian, richly colored red Silvia, and red-speckled Freckles for a garden full of contrasting leaves and crisp ribs. Pick tender young leaves for mixed salads or give plants more room to develop their upright romaine form.

Why Grow Tricolor Romaine Blend?

  • Three complementary varieties: Vivian, Silvia, and Freckles combine green, red, and speckled foliage in one packet.
  • Colorful fresh salads: Contrasting leaves make a beautiful bowl without needing three separate seed packets.
  • Romaine crunch: Upright leaves and crisp central ribs add texture to fresh meals.
  • Flexible harvest: Grow for young leaves, selective outer-leaf picking, or larger romaine plants.
  • Cool-season growing: A useful choice for spring and fall raised beds and roomy containers.
  • Open-pollinated heirloom blend: Save seed from selected plants, remembering that a home-saved mix will not necessarily retain the original variety proportions.

In the Kitchen

Toss freshly picked leaves with a light dressing so the colors and crisp texture shine. Combine younger leaves in a mixed salad, add larger leaves to sandwiches, or use romaine ribs for a crunchy chopped salad. Leaf color and size vary by variety, season, and growing conditions.

Planting and Growing

Direct sow in early spring when soil is workable, or in late summer for a fall crop. Sow shallowly, approximately ⅛–¼ inch deep, and keep the seedbed evenly moist. Alternatively, start indoors about 4 weeks before planting out and harden seedlings off gradually.

Choose full sun in cool weather or light afternoon shade as conditions warm. Thin for your intended harvest: closer spacing suits young-leaf cutting, while approximately 8–12 inches between plants allows larger romaine plants to develop. Keep weeds down and water consistently for steady growth.

For square foot gardening, use 4 plants per sq ft (young-leaf harvest; thin for larger heads). Sow small batches approximately every 2 weeks during suitable cool weather rather than planting the whole packet at once. Hot weather can reduce germination, encourage bolting, and affect flavor.

Harvest Details

Harvest timing: Approximately 40–50 days from sowing under suitable conditions; larger heads may take longer, and the three varieties do not mature in lockstep.
Blend: Freckles, Silvia, and Vivian romaine lettuces; proportions and individual plant appearance may vary.
Color: Green, red to burgundy, and red-speckled green leaves.
Growth habit: Upright romaine plants with crisp central leaf ribs.
Light: Full sun to partial shade.
Life cycle: Cool-season annual.
Botanical name: Lactuca sativa.
Seed type: Open-pollinated heirloom blend, non-GMO.
Seeds per packet: 0.7 g / approximately 500+ seeds; counts vary naturally by lot.

Harvest young leaves once they reach a useful size, or pick a few outer leaves while leaving the growing center intact. For a whole-plant harvest, cut at the base when the romaine reaches your preferred size, before bolting. Regrowth depends on plant condition and weather and is not unlimited.
