Sub Arctic Plenty — The 42-Day Heirloom Developed for the US Air Force in Greenland

Sub Arctic Plenty has one of the most remarkable origin stories in heirloom tomato history. Developed in the 1940s specifically to provide US Air Force personnel stationed in Greenland with fresh tomatoes, this extraordinary variety was bred to set fruit under cooler conditions than any other tomato — and it delivers. One of the earliest heirloom tomatoes available, Sub Arctic Plenty produces lots of small, flavorful red fruits in just 42 days from transplant, even when spring is cooler than average. A compact, determinate bush variety that needs no staking and is excellent for hanging baskets, containers, and short-season northern gardens.
