Pusztakolosz (Lycopersicon lycopersicum) is a genuinely rare heirloom from Cluj, Transylvania, Romania — a variety of deep cultural significance, as Cluj is known as Kolozsár in Hungarian and “Puszta” means prairie. Shared by German seed collector Gerhard Bohl through The Seed Ambassadors Project, this variety produces large, red-orange fruits weighing 1–2 lbs that are almost entirely flesh with very few seeds. The flavor is exceptional — delightfully sweet and mild with well-balanced acidity. A true heirloom worth saving. 80–85 days.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage. Water consistently. Harvest when fruits are fully red-orange and slightly soft. 80–85 days from transplant.
