Ponderosa Red (Lycopersicon lycopersicum) is a classic American heirloom introduced by Peter Henderson in 1891 — a massive, meaty, low-acid beefsteak tomato with mild, sweet flavor. Large, slightly ribbed fruits are deep red, juicy, and excellent for slicing, sandwiches, and fresh eating. Indeterminate plants produce generously all season. A beloved old-fashioned variety with over 130 years of garden history.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage. Water consistently. Harvest when fruits are fully red and slightly soft.
Plant type: Indeterminate
