Brandywine Pink (Sudduth’s Strain) is one of the most famous heirloom tomatoes in the world — and this is believed to be the original strain. This Amish variety has been grown in Pennsylvania since the 1880s, collected by Ben Quisenberry of Big Tomato Gardens from Dorris Sudduth Hill, whose family grew it for over 100 years. The Sudduth Strain is more pink than red, producing large beefsteak fruits that can reach up to 2 pounds, with wonderfully rich, intense, and deeply complex flavor that has made Brandywine the benchmark for heirloom tomato taste. Prolific potato-leaf plants commonly produce 25–30 fruits per season. Indeterminate, 80–90 days from transplant.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors 3 weeks after last frost date — plants tolerate no frost. Space 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage indeterminate vines. Water consistently and deeply. Harvest when fruits are fully pink and give slightly to gentle pressure.
