The Dutchman is an old heirloom dating back to the 1920s β a large, pinkish-red beefsteak with a characteristic that sets it apart from almost every other tomato: almost solid flesh with very few seeds. The result is a tomato that is extraordinarily meaty and satisfying, with a dense, rich interior that makes it perfect for sandwiches, salads, and slicing where you want maximum tomato and minimum waste. Plants produce good yields of 1β3 lb fruits on vigorous indeterminate vines that reward consistent care with generous harvests.
Indeterminate, open-pollinated, 85 days. A century-old heirloom that earns its place in any serious kitchen garden.
Start indoors 6β8 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24β36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage large vines. Water consistently. Harvest when fruits are fully pinkish-red and give slightly to gentle pressure.
