Broccoli Raab (Rapini), Heirloom Seeds — The Southern Italian Staple With Nutty, Bitter, Pungent Flavor in Just 45 Days

Broccoli Raab (Brassica rapa) — also known as Rapini, Rapa, Rapine, and Turnip Broccoli — is a rapidly growing annual and a cornerstone of Southern Italian cuisine. A relative of turnips with flowering heads similar in shape to classic broccoli, Broccoli Raab delivers a distinctive flavor that has been described as nutty, bitter, and pungent — complex and deeply satisfying in sautés, pasta, and alongside grilled meats. Extraordinarily nutritious: high in vitamins A, C, and K, plus potassium, calcium, and iron. Harvest leaves when 10–15 inches tall for best flavor. 45 days.

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors in early spring or fall in full sun to part shade. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, 1 inch apart, in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 6 inches. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest when plants are 10–15 inches tall and before flowers fully open — once flowering begins, flavor intensifies. Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvest. Bolt-resistant in cool weather.
