Green Calabrese is the broccoli that earns its space in the garden twice over. First, it produces large, dark green heads 3–6 inches across on sturdy 18–28 inch plants with a rich, deeply satisfying flavor that will make you question why you ever bought store-bought broccoli. Then, after you cut the main head, the plant keeps going — sending out a continuous flush of smaller side shoots all the way through summer and into frost.
Hardy, prolific, and versatile — eat it fresh, freeze it, can it, or harvest young leaves and shoots as nutrient-dense microgreens.
Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost, or direct sow in late summer for a fall crop. Transplant outdoors when seedlings are 4–6 inches tall, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun. Water consistently and deeply. Harvest the main head when tight and firm before flowers open. Leave the plant in place — side shoots will continue to develop for weeks.
