Jewel Mix Nasturtium, Heirloom Herb Seeds — The Edible Flower That Started as a Vegetable

Nasturtiums were among the first New World plants to captivate European gardeners — but they weren't introduced as flowers. The Incas grew them as a salad crop and medicinal herb, and that culinary tradition is worth reviving. Every part of the Jewel Mix Nasturtium is edible: the peppery, watercress-like leaves add a spicy bite to salads; the brilliant 2-inch blooms in red, pink, orange, and yellow make a showy garnish or edible decoration; and the seeds can be pickled as a caper substitute. Compact, mounding plants hold their bright blooms above light green foliage all season long, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in abundance.

Easy to grow in containers with a supporting frame, or directly in the garden. 80 days.

Why Grow Jewel Mix Nasturtium?

  • Entirely edible — leaves, flowers, and seeds all used in cooking
  • Brilliant 2-inch blooms — red, pink, orange, and yellow, stunning as a garnish
  • Peppery, watercress-like flavor — adds a spicy bite to salads and dishes
  • Bee, butterfly, and hummingbird magnet — a pollinator powerhouse
  • Inca culinary heritage — one of the original New World salad crops
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors after last frost in full sun to part shade. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, 10–12 inches apart. Nasturtiums prefer poor to average soil — rich soil produces more leaves than flowers. Water consistently but avoid overwatering. Harvest leaves and flowers regularly to encourage continuous production. Can be grown in containers with a supporting frame.
