White Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) has earned its place in the herb garden through centuries of practical use — the traditional remedy for coughs and respiratory complaints that gave us horehound candy and cough drops. Mounds of silvery, woolly foliage grow 18 inches tall and somewhat broader, creating a beautiful, long-lasting display through most of the season. The leaves carry a pleasantly bitter, aromatic flavor that has been used in teas, lozenges, and syrups for generations. A hardy, drought-tolerant perennial that is beloved by bees and butterflies, and remarkably easy to grow once established.
Surface sow indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost — seeds need light to germinate. Keep soil moist at 65–70°F. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed in full sun with well-draining, lean soil. Drought-tolerant once established — avoid overwatering. Trim back after flowering to maintain compact mound shape. Self-sows modestly once established.
