Winter Rye (Secale cereale) — also known as Common Rye — is one of the most diverse and efficient cover crop performers in any garden. A winter-hardy annual grain growing 30–40 inches tall, winter rye replenishes depleted soils with vital nitrogen, breaks up heavy, compact, and clay-rich soils with its deep root system, and suppresses weeds through allelopathy — a natural trait that slows the germination of surrounding weeds, invasive species, and unwanted reseeding. What Winter Rye Does for Your Garden

Harvesting Rye Berries

If growing for grain harvest, allow winter rye to mature until seed heads are dried, hard, and heavy. Cut with scissors or a scythe depending on crop size. Bundle into bales with twine (about the size of a bundle of wood) and allow to dry for 2–3 weeks before harvesting rye berries. Rye berries can be milled, rolled, steel-cut, or boiled for nearly any occasion — traditional rye bread, rolled rye porridge, or steel-cut rye cereal.

Growing Notes

As a cover crop: Broadcast 2–4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft directly in early spring or early fall for overwintering. Lightly rake and tamp. Mow before it begins to seed and till back into soil approximately one month before sowing a new spring crop. Optimal growing temperature 35–65°F. Full sun.

For grain harvest: Sow 2–3 seeds ½ inch deep, 2–3 inches apart in fertile, loamy, well-drained soil in full sun. Germinates in 4–10 days. No thinning required.
