Winter Luxury Pie Pumpkin Seeds — Heirloom 1893 | The Best Pie Pumpkin Ever Grown, White-Netted Golden Skin, Silky Sweet Flesh

Cucurbita pepo — Introduced by Johnson & Stokes in 1893, Winter Luxury is widely regarded as the finest pie pumpkin ever developed. Medium-sized, 5–7 lb tangerine-orange fruits blanketed with distinctive white netting — beautiful in the garden and on the table. The flesh is exceptionally sweet, smooth, and silky — far superior to standard carving pumpkins for baking. A favorite of everyone who grows it. 105 days.

Why Winter Luxury Is the Best Pie Pumpkin

Most pumpkins grown for carving have coarse, watery flesh that produces mediocre pies. Winter Luxury was bred specifically for the kitchen — the flesh is dense, smooth, and naturally sweet with a silky texture that requires no straining. The white netting on the skin is a visual indicator of the variety’s exceptional quality and is unique among pie pumpkins.

Why Grow Winter Luxury?

  • The best pie pumpkin — introduced 1893; widely considered the finest pie pumpkin ever developed; exceptional sweet, smooth, silky flesh
  • Distinctive white netting — beautiful, unique appearance; the netting is a hallmark of this variety
  • Medium size — 5–7 lbs; manageable for kitchen use; one pumpkin yields multiple pies
  • Long storage — excellent keeping quality; stores well through winter
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

In the Kitchen

Roast halved pumpkin at 375°F until tender; scoop and purée for pies, soups, and muffins. The silky, smooth flesh requires no straining — simply purée and use. Excellent for pumpkin butter, bread, pancakes, and risotto. Toast the seeds with salt and olive oil.

Growing Notes

Plant seeds outdoors after all frost risk has passed and soil temperature reaches 65°F. Plant 3–5 seeds 1 inch deep per mound; thin to 2 strongest seedlings. Water deeply but infrequently. Harvest when skin is fully orange; cut with a 2–3 inch stem attached. Store in a warm, dry location.
