White Sweet Spanish β€” The Large, Mild Heirloom Long-Day Onion Built for Northern Gardens

White Sweet Spanish is a classic heirloom long-day onion β€” large, sweet, and mild with good storage quality and a clean, easy-to-peel skin that makes it a favorite with cooks. The bulbs are impressive in size and mild enough to enjoy raw, while their moderate storage life makes them practical for the kitchen through the season. Best suited for northern gardens where long summer days trigger bulb formation, White Sweet Spanish is an excellent choice for gardeners who want a reliable, versatile white onion. Companion plant with cabbage family members, lettuce, or tomatoes; avoid planting near peas or beans.

Why Grow White Sweet Spanish?

  • Long-day heirloom β€” best suited for northern gardens
  • Good storage quality β€” practical for the kitchen through the season
  • Versatile in the kitchen β€” excellent raw, cooked & stored
  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 2–3 months before last frost. Sow seeds Β½ inch deep in a flat, keep at room temperature and consistently moist. When tops fall over, trim to 3–4 inches to focus energy on root development. Transplant outdoors 4 weeks before last frost (or when soil reaches 55Β°F), spacing 4–6 inches apart in rows in full sun with light, rich soil. To direct sow, sow 3 seeds per inch Β½ inch deep; thin to 2–6 inches apart. Thinned seedlings can be eaten fresh or transplanted. Long-day onions can also be grown as a fall or winter crop in warmer climates.
