White Swan Echinacea β€” The Honey-Scented Pearl-White Coneflower With 400 Years of Native American Heritage

White Swan Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea alba) is a stunning warm-season perennial flowering herb with bold pearl-white flowers and golden-bronze pistils on thick green stems reaching 2 feet tall. Creamy white, honey-scented blooms appear within four months from seed, filling the garden with fragrance and color from mid-to-late summer. The golden-bronze pistils turn black before the plant sets seed β€” a beautiful and distinctive feature. Thrives in substandard soil, winter hardy to Zone 3, and an excellent choice for containers. Echinacea species are native to North America and have been used as traditional herbal remedies by Great Plains Indian tribes for over 400 years.

  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost or direct sow outdoors in early spring. Sow seeds on the surface or barely cover β€” light aids germination. Cold stratification for 4–8 weeks improves germination rates. Transplant or thin to 12–18 inches apart (4 plants per square foot) in full sun to part shade. Echinacea thrives in well-draining soil and is drought-tolerant once established. Blooms in the second year from seed. Harvest petals during summer blooming season for culinary or herbal use.
