White Horehound, Heirloom Herb Seeds

Bring softly textured silver-green foliage and old-fashioned herbal character to your garden with White Horehound (Marrubium vulgare). Its rounded, woolly, crinkled leaves form an attractive branching mound, while small off-white flowers gather around the stems. Known for its strongly bitter, aromatic flavor and traditional use in horehound candy, this perennial suits a sunny herb bed with excellent drainage.

Why Grow White Horehound?

  • Distinctive foliage: Gray-green, downy leaves with scalloped edges add texture beside other garden herbs.
  • Traditional herbal flavor: Leaves have a pronounced bitter, earthy-minty character associated with old-fashioned candies and herbal preparations.
  • Dry-garden suitability: Established plants tolerate drought and prefer leaner soil over rich, constantly wet conditions.
  • Perennial habit: Upright, branching plants typically reach 12–24 inches, with a spreading mound below.
  • Open-pollinated heirloom: Grow a traditional herb from seed for ornamental interest and established culinary uses, without treating it as a promised remedy.

Growing Notes

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before transplanting, or sow outdoors in spring. Sow shallowly, barely covering the seeds, and keep evenly moist until emergence. Germination may take about 14–28 days and can be uneven. Transplant after frost danger has passed into full sun and well-drained soil.

Allow 12–18 inches between plants, or 1 plant per 4 sq ft for a developing mound in a raised bed. Water young plants while they establish, then avoid keeping the root zone constantly wet. Trim after flowering and remove seed heads to limit unwanted self-seeding.
