Whirlybird Mix Nasturtium Seeds — Heirloom | 5-Color Edible Flower Blend, Spurless Upward-Facing Blooms, Peppery Microgreens

Tropaeolum majus — Whirlybird is the nasturtium that shows its face. Unlike traditional nasturtiums where flowers hide beneath the foliage, Whirlybird’s spurless blooms face upward and outward — fully visible above the leaves, making the color display far more dramatic in the garden and in arrangements. A rich blend of five colors: scarlet, pale yellow, soft peach, gold tangerine, and cherry rose. Every part of this plant is edible — the flowers, leaves, and seeds — and the Whirlybird microgreen is exceptional: medium green leaves with maroon-rimmed wavy edges, pale pink stems, and a peppery bite with a hint of fruity sweetness. ~20 seeds per packet.

Why Whirlybird Stands Apart

Most nasturtiums tuck their flowers under the canopy of leaves. Whirlybird was bred specifically to hold its blooms upright and outward — spurless flowers that face the viewer rather than hiding. The result is a more colorful, more visible display in the garden, in containers, and in cut flower arrangements. The five-color mix produces a range of warm tones that work beautifully together and separately.

Why Grow Whirlybird Mix?

  • Upward-facing spurless blooms — flowers display above the foliage rather than hiding beneath it; far more visible and dramatic than standard nasturtiums
  • Five-color blend — scarlet, pale yellow, soft peach, gold tangerine, and cherry rose; a warm, sophisticated color range
  • Fully edible — flowers, leaves, and seeds are all edible; peppery, watercress-like flavor with fruity sweetness
  • Outstanding microgreen — medium green leaves with maroon-rimmed wavy edges and pale pink stems; peppery with a hint of fruity sweetness; one of the most visually striking microgreens available
  • Companion planting — repels aphids and attracts beneficial insects; excellent companion for beans, cucumbers, and brassicas
  • Easy annual — direct sow after last frost; fast-growing and prolific

In the Kitchen

  • Edible flowers: Toss whole blooms into salads for color and peppery bite; use as a garnish for soups, grain bowls, and cheese boards
  • Stuffed flowers: Fill with soft cheese or herbed cream cheese for an elegant appetizer
  • Microgreens: Harvest at 7–14 days for vivid color and concentrated peppery-sweet flavor; use as a garnish or salad base
  • Leaves: Use young leaves in salads, wraps, and sandwiches; mince into compound butters and herb oils
  • Pickled seeds: Pickle unripe seeds in brine as a caper substitute
  • Dessert garnish: Crystallize flowers with egg white and sugar for cake and pastry decoration

Growing Notes

  • Type: Annual; direct sow after last frost
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade; partial shade in hot climates extends bloom season
  • Soil: Poor to average, well-drained soil; rich soil promotes foliage over flowers
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant once established; overwatering reduces flowering
  • Microgreens: Sow densely in trays; harvest at 7–14 days when first true leaves appear
  • Companion plants: Beans, cucumbers, cabbage, squash, brassicas
