Tuscany Cantaloupe Melon, Heirloom Seeds — The Legendary Italian Gourmet Cantaloupe From Tuscany, 2–3 lb Salmon-Fleshed Fruits With Intoxicating Aroma and Buttery Sweetness, 78 Days

Tuscany Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo), known in Italy as Melone di Toscana, is one of the most celebrated melon varieties in Italian cuisine — a traditional heirloom from the warm, fertile hills of Tuscany where it has been grown for generations. Round 2–3 lb fruits are covered in a distinctive tan-brown finely netted, sutured husk with subtle striped outer skin. Inside, thick salmon-colored flesh surrounds a small, tidy seed cavity that makes every fruit easy to cut and serve. The flesh is juicy, velvety, and buttery with an intensely rich, sugary sweetness and a heady floral aroma that fills the air at peak ripeness. Rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene (vitamin A). Excellent storage capacity: 5–7 days at room temperature, 10–14 days refrigerated. A standout market seller with undeniable curb appeal. 78 days.

Why Grow Tuscany Cantaloupe?

  • Legendary Tuscan heirloom — traditional Italian variety grown for generations in Mediterranean gardens

  • High in vitamin C and beta-carotene (vitamin A) — nutritious and flavorful
  • Good storage capacity — 5–7 days room temp, 10–14 days refrigerated
  • Exceptional market seller — striking appearance with undeniable curb appeal
  • Heat-tolerant — thrives in warm summers; suitable for short-season climates too
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

In the Kitchen

Tuscany Cantaloupe is spectacular served simply — chilled, halved, and eaten with a spoon to let the extraordinary flavor speak for itself. The classic Italian pairing of prosciutto e melone (prosciutto and melon) showcases Tuscany at its best: sweet, aromatic flesh against salty cured ham. Cube into fruit salads for color and sweetness. Blend into chilled melon soup or juice for a refreshing summer drink. Wrap melon balls in prosciutto for elegant appetizers. The thick flesh holds its shape well for display platters. Serve at farmers markets and let the aroma do the selling.

Harvesting

Tuscany Cantaloupe is ready to harvest when it emits a strong, sweet fragrance and the skin under the netting turns slightly yellow. The fruit will slip easily off the vine with gentle pressure — this is the classic “slip stage.” If the fruit resists, give it a few more days. Harvest in the morning for best flavor. Store at room temperature 5–7 days or refrigerate up to 10–14 days.

Growing Notes

Direct sow ½–1 inch deep after last frost when soil consistently reaches 65–75°F — Tuscany thrives in warm soil. In short-season climates, start indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting. Space 24 inches apart in rows 4–6 feet apart, or plant 2–3 seeds per hill. Melons are heavy feeders: amend with compost or balanced fertilizer before planting. During vine growth, apply nitrogen-rich fertilizer; switch to phosphorus/potassium-heavy fertilizer once flowering begins. Side-dress with compost throughout the season. Water consistently 1–2 inches per week — especially during fruit development. Mulch around plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep developing fruits clean. Pinch unnecessary side shoots. For vertical growing on a trellis, support fruits with fabric or netting slings to prevent vine damage from the weight of the melon.
