Sweet Meat — The Oregon Heirloom That Makes the Best Pumpkin Pie on Earth

A delicious heirloom from Oregon, Sweet Meat earns its name with every harvest. Large, flattened fruits with beautiful deep sea blue-green skin carry deep orange flesh that is fine-grained, very sweet, and genuinely exceptional — superb eaten on its own, added to soups and roasts, and baked into a pie that has been called the “best pumpkin pie on Earth.” One of the best squashes for the Native American Three Sisters planting method, Sweet Meat is also excellent for canning and freezing. Allow room for vigorous vines up to 10 feet. 95 days.

Why Grow Sweet Meat?

  • Oregon heirloom — a Pacific Northwest classic with exceptional flavor
  • Deep sea blue-green skin — large, flattened fruits with striking appearance
  • Deep orange, fine-grained flesh — very sweet, superb for pies, soups & roasting
  • Excellent for canning and freezing — a true kitchen workhorse
  • Three Sisters compatible — one of the best squashes for traditional companion planting
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 65°F, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Space plants 48–60 inches apart in full sun — vines reach up to 10 feet. Water consistently. Harvest at 95 days when rind is hard and fully colored. Cure in a warm, dry location for 2–3 weeks before storage for best flavor and shelf life.
