Sweet Dakota Rose Watermelon, Heirloom Seeds — The Short-Season Champion With Deep Rose Flesh, Thin Rind, and High Sugar in Just 75–80 Days

There’s a moment every summer gardener lives for — the crack of a ripe watermelon splitting open to reveal deep rose-pink flesh, dripping with juice, impossibly sweet. Sweet Dakota Rose (Citrullus lanatus) delivers that moment reliably, even in climates where watermelons have no business being this good. Bred for short northern summers, this heirloom produces full-size 10–15-pound fruits in just 75–80 days — one of the finest early-maturing watermelons available to home gardeners. Thin rind. High sugar. Deep rose flesh.

Why Grow Sweet Dakota Rose?

  • Short-season champion — matures in 75–80 days, ideal for northern and high-altitude gardens
  • Exceptional sweetness — high sugar content bred for flavor, not shelf life
  • Beautiful deep rose flesh — stunning color with classic juicy watermelon flavor
  • Thin rind — more flesh per fruit than many commercial varieties
  • 10–15 lb fruits — manageable size, perfect for a family gathering
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

In the Kitchen

Slice thick and serve cold on a hot summer day. Cube into fruit salads, blend into agua fresca with lime and mint, or freeze into watermelon popsicles. The high sugar content makes Sweet Dakota Rose exceptional for watermelon lemonade and chilled summer soups.

Growing Notes

Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost; transplant carefully — watermelons dislike root disturbance. Plant after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 65°F. Sandy loam, well-draining, warm soil; pH 6.0–6.8. Benefits from black plastic mulch to warm soil in northern climates. Ripeness indicators: tendril nearest the fruit turns brown and dry; underside turns creamy yellow; hollow thump when tapped.
